North Street Taxis, Shankill Bound

Fine Art Belfast Print

Two Belfast black taxis make their way up North Street towards the Shankill Road.

The viewer’s eye follows their route while overhead, the Black mountain keeps watch.

This study is filled with Una’s typical energetic mark-making.

She loves any opportunity to use thick yellow oil paint.

Here, it’s represented in flashes of road markings and taxi registration plates.

The story behind...

North Street Taxis, Shankill Bound

The older style London black cab that I have depicted here seems heavy and almost struggles up the hill.

I imagine the customers inside- seats that flip down and the glass panel between passengers and driver.

This scene resonates with me.

It reminds me of childhood visits to the city centre and my student days in ‘York Street’ Art College where I walked passed North Street most days to get the bus home up the Antrim Road.
