Bull Calf with The White Eyelashes
Fine Art Calf Print
What a striking gaze and pose!
‘Calf With The White Eyelashes’ looks at us directly and we immediately strike a rapport with him.
His already broad body is gaining strength and is full of the energetically ‘flicked’ mark-making and rich colour so typical of Una’s studies.
Balanced on those chunky ‘bull calf feet’ are a swirl of hues and marks that represent his coat and body.
It’s certainly not a spectrum of colours that we would normally associate with a bovine creature but one that Una’s close observation and unique style presents to us.
Yellow ochre spills into teal, while mint, lemon and neutral tones contrast with an array of blues.

Bull Calf with The White Eyelashes
I was drawn to this creature because of his unique features.
He lived beside us in the cow sheds last winter and his particular colouring stood out to me.
Apart from his pensive demeanour, I noticed that, although the markings around his eyes were dark, his eyelashes were white.
I loved this quirky and contrasting feature.
Feeling a connection to him meant that the painting seemed to happen very naturally to me.
It ‘spilled’ easily on to the canvas encouraged by intuitive mark-making.
Areas of impasto style paint give a sense of texture and contrast directly with thinly painted, more delicate detail.
